OUR {UN}BLOG

This is an {un}blog, and not really a blog (because I never really do anything completely conventionally), but I certainly do have a lot to say and share (for those of you who know me, you did not need me to spell this out). I’m SO fortunate to be able to connect with people, products, and ideas that I find incredibly inspiring every day, and I hope to use this virtual space to give you an inside look into what’s going on in my (crazy) world…which, I share with you.

Along with my small but mighty team, we will be posting content under 3 main departments, and encourage you to share with us as well. If something excites or outrages you, if you have a product or service that we should know about, or should you have any comments, complaints, criticisms or compliments please be in touch.

Yoni Freedhoff

IWM: Yoni Freedhoff

We spoke with Dr. Yoni Freedhoff. Yoni is a family doc, Assistant Prof. at the University of Ottawa, Author of The Diet Fix, and founder of Ottawa’s non-surgical Bariatric Medical Institute – a multi-disciplinary, ethical, evidence-based nutrition and weight management centre. We found out how he also manages, on top of it all, to write and share great blog content, how much sugar is ok, and the (very simple) trick to make your diet actually work.

Your small business needs an online presence – and if you’ve spent any time with us, you’ll know that this is not negotiable. We’ve designed this checklist to keep you organized. (more…)

Not all Natural Lipsticks are Created Equal

When it comes to what you’re putting on your lips, steer clear of lip colours full of lead, aluminum, and other toxic heavy metals (sadly still widely available).

Our Eco-Travel Roundup

Traveling is definitely harder on our world than staying at home sweet home, but, if we maintain our healthier habits en route and away, we should enjoy and experience all we can. Travel is a true opportunity and gift, whether it is near or far from home, or for short or more extended periods of time.

Canadiana

We have all heard about the many reasons we should shop local. It might mean shopping for food directly from your farmer at the market, or shopping an indie store instead of a big box store. (more…)

IWM: Doug McNish

We interviewed Chef Doug McNish (again!), author of 3 award-winning cookbooks, and owner of The Public Kitchen in Toronto. We found out what foods he loves sharing with his 1 year old, why eating organic is as important as being vegan, and why he took the time to create a series children’s colouring books. (more…)

Simple Tips to Improve Your SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can sound intimidating, but you don’t need to know how to code to improve your Google ranking. Strong SEO means that when someone does an online search relevant to you (and your business) you’ll appear higher up in the results on search engines like Google. Appearing at the top of the search results means more traffic to your site, and allows your customers to find you easily. (more…)

Vegan Food

Not all Vegan Food is Created Equal

People constantly ask me if I’m vegan – if you really need to label me, I prefer to be called a Lisa-tarian. I choose quality foods that support my community and my health, I shop at farmers’ markets first and independent stores second, I’m fiercely committed to organics, and I trace my food back to where it came from. I believe in eating plant-based. A vegan diet can be healthy in many ways, but(more…)

We’ve Had Enough Of This Sh*t

Honestly? I think the sentence, “I’ve had enough of this shit” is the last thing every woman on earth has ever said, right before she finally liberated herself from stupidity, violence, and oppression. You KNOW it was the last thing Rosa Parks said, right before she sat down on that bus and refused to move. And this is true on the personal level just as much as on the global level. “I’ve had enough of this shit” is the last thing every abused woman has ever said, right before she finally walked away from her abuser. Until we women say in holy unison, “WE’VE ALL HAD ENOUGH OF THIS SHIT”, nothing will ever change. ~ Elizabeth Gilbert (more…)

IWM: Rob Storm

Rob Storm is the Director of Papers + Property at Borden Communications, a National Account Manager at Epson, and is passionate about helping small businesses find sustainable insurance solutions. He’s also Lisa’s husband! We (Megan and Laura) interviewed him and found out what work-life balance looks like for him, whether he feels pressure to live “green”, and how his family can afford acupuncture, massage, and a holistic dentist.
