The Barbershop Theory states, “If you hang around the barber shop long enough, sooner or later, you are going to get a haircut.”
Although this theory is often used for recovery, we like to use it to support the notion that who we surround ourselves with, and the spaces we spend time in affect our mood, mentality, nervous system, and ultimately, all dimensions of our wellness.
When you hang around negative-minded people, your attitude is bound to change and give in to negativity, regardless of your outlook. When you spend time with depressed or tired people, sooner or later, it will affect the quality of your energy. When you attract “energy vampires”, be ready to have your boundaries compromised.
Don’t put yourself in situations where undesirable consequences are likely to unfold. A common way to exist is to tune so much out in our day … you probably aren’t paying attention to the majority of the stimuli surrounding you, unless you decide to pay attention and live with more connection. Set yourself up for success by putting yourself into good situations. And, when that’s not possible or when you find yourself in a less than desirable situation, hold your boundaries and protect your good energy.
Essentially, what comes around, goes around.
