Have you ever been told to avoid bread?
There are few things in life better than a perfectly toasted slice of bread with a delicious sweet or savoury spread– we think of a piece of bread as a canvas for Kind Food, especially when you know your bread is kind and healthy.
Not all Bread is created equal.
Supermarket shelves are stuffed with bagged bread made from refined grains and refined sugars (or worse, ingredients like high fructose corn syrup). Think about how long they last and how squishy they are and remain! Thankfully, many families are rightfully moving away from ultra-processed and refined bread, which is made by removing the wheat kernel’s germ and bran (which contain all the nutrients). BUT to note .. whole wheat bread isn’t much better, even if it sounds like it would be … the label is often simply “healthwashing”! Whole wheat bread often isn’t even made with whole grains, and while it’s might be a (small) step up from white bread, it contains very low levels of nutrients. The many breads that are now mass produced in factories, using unrecognizable artificial ingredients, colours, and flavours, and ingredients coming from unkind farms, are not doing us (or our world) any favours. These processed breads are not good for us, cause spikes in blood sugar levels, and create a lot of plastic bag (and tie/tab) waste.
