Many of you have asked about trends in Wellness Intelligence … here’s another “better decision” that will help you take the better action in conscious pursuit of yet another “better thing”! It’s good for you, great for the planet, and even better for your hair. It’s going to make you feel great … and that’s what Wellness Intelligence is about.
Replace your traditional bottles of shampoo and conditioner with bars.
Bars offer a number of benefits over bottles including a healthier product, reduced waste, a greater value, more convenient storage/portability … and they work!
Many of us are set in our ways after a lifetime of shampoo and conditioner bottles use … we include ourselves! Why are we clinging to bottles? Is it that they are a better product or is it because it’s the way we have always done it?
Shampoo and conditioner bars are gaining in popularity and for good reasons …
+ They eliminate the need for wasteful plastic packaging. “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” ~ Anne-Marie Bonneau
+ The brands making them are forward thinking and many are using super-healthy ingredients and embody Empathy Economics – backed by good humans.
+ Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) from personal care products are flushed down the drain and end up in our rivers, streams, and oceans where they “alter hormone levels leading to reproductive effects in aquatic organisms” according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
+ Plastics are made from fossil fuels and end up in the oceans and breakdown into microplastics, which fish and plankton eat because they think it is food. Now microplastics are found inside fish all over the globe.
+ Approximately 80 percent of traditional shampoo is comprised of water. That’s right — the product we all have been using for decades is only 1/5th active ingredients. To be clear, this isn’t some nefarious scheme. Bottled shampoo requires high water content to achieve its desired consistency and get a good lather.
+ Shampoo bars take water out of the equation and let you provide that yourself. This creates a product which lasts far longer without the filler. Shampoo bars are generally comprised exclusively of oils and active hair care ingredients. The heavier a product is the more fossil fuels are needed to transport it from point A to point B.
The solution?
Considering all we mentioned, shampoo bars are way better for the environment. However, everything we use on our bodies has a potential impact on our health, including our shampoo and conditioner bars, so we thought it was important to take a look at all the brands out there and evaluate them in terms of toxic ingredients and packaging.
You can find the shampoo and conditioner bars we use and enjoy in The Wellness Intelligence Collective.
