Is your tea bagged?
We love waking up and winding down with a hot cup of tea. A good tea is not only comfort in a cup, but it can also give us a boost, help us sleep, detox and/or nourish us … all depending on what’s in it. Especially when we’re on-the-go, it’s handy to have pre-divided, portable tea bags with a favourite blend. But…
Not All Tea Bags Are Created Equal
When steeping your favourite teas, the last thing on your mind should be the harmful chemicals soaking in your cup. Most tea bags are manufactured using paper that’s been bleached with chlorine (because at least they look good?!?!). The bags are sealed with thermoplastic and coated in epichlorohydrin and dioxin to strengthen the paper. If you think epichlorohydrin and dioxin sound scary, you’re right – they are. When steeped in water, they both have carcinogenic effects. Kind of the opposite of what you wanted when you reached for the healthy herbal remedy on the shelf, right? Don’t even get me started on tea bags made from nylon.
